Apple trees at Radke Orchards, near Michigan City, are blossoming a month early because of record-breaking warm weather in March, owner Ruth Radke said.
That early blossoming concerns Radke as well as fellow apple orchard owners in Northwest Indiana because it could put this summer’s apple crop at risk.
“If there is a hard freeze between now and May 15, we could lose our crop or part of the crop,” Radke said. “It’s the time of year you realize you’re not in control. God is in control.”

The 2011 apple season is underway. The trees have a large crop this year, but the apples are selling fast. Call ahead to verify that your favorite variety is available. (219) 872-3140.
Our 2011 season will get underway on September 3. We will open at 8:30 AM. At that time, the early season apples, including Honeycrisp, Gala, and McIntosh will be available. Please be aware that due to the popularity of the Honeycrisp variety, we cannot guarantee availability on any specific day. It would be prudent to arrive early if you are intending to pick Honeycrisp. U-Pick is $0.65 / lb, regardless of variety.

The 2010 Apple season is nearly complete. As such, we will be closed during the week, re-opening this Friday at Noon through the weekend for sales of seconds. These apples will be sold for $0.30 / lb.
